Why can't I snatch like Rich Froning or Camille Leblanc-Bazinet? They make it looks so easy!

Olympic lifting is not for the faint of heart. This sport requires a large amount of time, effort, strength and most of all patience. The Snatch and Clean & Jerk can make you feel like you can take on the world if you perform the lift correctly but if you are off by the slightest these lifts can make you feel like the world is on top of you.

First thing to being great with Olympic lifting is you must set the ego aside and learn the technique before trying to lift like Klokov. This part could take months to perfect before you are able to put a decent amount of weight over your head. I cannot emphasize the importance of building up your technique. When you see amazing lifters like Klokov throw the weight over their head like it is nothing, it is because of their technique. Olympic lifters spend YEARS perfecting their technique because you can always improve on something no matter how good you think you are. Technique can be very frustrating! Just remember that if it frustrating you then it is challenging you and if it is challenging you then you making yourself better.

This leads me the importance of mobility in Olympic lifting. You can work on the technique of Olympic weightlifting everyday but if your mobility doesn’t allow you to get into the proper positions it is a waste. As most of you know the Overhead Squat is one of the biggest holes in most CrossFit athlete’s game because of the mobility aspect. In order to be able to go full range and get the most weight possible overhead you must have excellent flexibility. We all wish it was easy to become as flexible as Rich Froning or Camille Leblanc-Bazinet but sadly it is not. Mobility must, I repeat MUST be worked on everyday if you want to achieve your full potential in the overhead squat position. If you just take 10 minutes a day to work on mobility you will be in shock the difference it will make in your range of motion on movements.

Lastly it is going to take a lot of patience. I know of some lifters spending years to add 2-5 kilos to their snatch. Granted these are the highest level Olympic lifters there are but that is aLl they work on. Imagine if it takes someone years to do that if that is all they are working on and you are trying to add weight quickly to your snatch or clean & jerk while trying to learn everything else in CrossFit. The point is that is going to take time but it is worth it! This is why it is such a big deal to PR on your snatch or clean & jerk. Take your time, work on your technique, do your mobility homework, and most of all trust your coach. If you do all of these things I promise you that you will improve!
